Postby dj kristoff on Tue Apr 01, 2008 10:05 pm

so ive been using ableton for production for a while now and thought it was a wicked piece of kit.so user friendly and quick to use.

BUT

always thought of it as a djin tool a bit, well just not right.

UNTIL

watchin rennie pilgrem using it on sat havin the equivalent of 8 decks and a live keybord blew me away just didnt realise what you can do with the click of a mouse pad.

so its into ableton mode for me

well maybe ????????

Mate, I wish I could have been there to see it in action. I still can't grasp how it's used to do live mixing!!!!!!!!!!

I've never been sure about using apps like Ableton for mixing. We've had the Vinyl vs CDJ argument for years and now there's also the CDJ vs Laptop argument. For me, although I have no problem with the technicalities of using Ableton to DJ there is NO denying that it does subtract from the general "performance" when you're playing. Even something as simple and switching between two CDJs / decks and mixing on the fly makes a massive difference.

I think if I was to venture over to using a laptop to DJ I would use something like Serato, because at least then you maintain the "performance" element which I think is really important in dance music.

Wel if it was you DJing that wouldnt be a bad thing, wouldnt have to see your ugly mug hahahahhaha

But back to the original topic.....doesnt the laptop method practically do all the hard work for you? Like beat match it etc?

Yes it does! Pretty much everything is done for you which is another negative point. In fairness CDJs have beat counters, and I find it frustrating that people use these when they learn to mix using CDs but I guess it's a sign of the times. I use CDJs but only ever have the need to use the tempo display to see how fast i'm playing, I guess thats just a natural progression from vinyl.

I cant see how technically a DJ can wire up a laptop without stopping the music etc? How is it done? Does it mean these headline djs must arrive early to set up their kit???

Jonno, its plugs into the back of the mixer, ths can be done just b4 they start to play :thumbsup as a 100% vinyl DJ I pour scorn on such things.....but each to their own! mind you I have seen Paul Van Dyk play several times and he uses 2 laptops!!!!! and remixes tracks in real time live as he plays!!!!!Awesome to see live!!!!

Hi Ben, yeah thats it!

the name escaped me yesterday, Pete Tong demo'd it on a web video, looked quite cool, i dunno if putting that much into a palm sized gadjet is what a clubber would want to see if there not keen on laptops though haha
